A Blockchain for the Masses

Engineered to scale and last, æternity is an easily accessible blockchain platform for the global public. With numerous innovative functionalities and performance far ahead of earlier blockchains, æternity allows its users and community to seamlessly venture into the new era of society, economy, and digital interactions.

Democratizing
Blockchain

Founded in 2016 by Yanislav Malahov, the æternity blockchain project was born out of a desire for a more fair Internet supported by scalable, open-source and cryptographic software, with a commitment to technical excellence. æternity blockchain itself launched as the public æternity mainnet in 2018. It is now a blossoming community of enthusiasts supported via the æternity crypto foundation.

What sets æternity apart

At its core, æternity is a blockchain protocol and a smart contract platform that goes beyond what traditional blockchains do. It is designed to be fault-tolerant and perfect for cases with billions of transactions in DEFI and more.

With the æternity Hyperchains consensus upgrade (coming soon via governance) æternity mainnet will be able to scale further on-chain as well as allow everyone to launch their own private (or public) æternity-style sidechain without asking anyone for permission. Hyperchains consensus will piggyback on the PoW of the Bitcoin blockchain to create a secure tamperproof random number to secure each hyperchain. Read the related whitepaper.

Advanced State Channels Technology

State channels make it possible to execute smart contracts off-chain. The blockchain enforces the smart contract code only in the case of a disagreement between the contracting parties. Unlike most blockchains, æternity’s core protocol was re-engineered specifically so it can accommodate state channels on the protocol and smart contract language level, making it easier to build applications for global-scale use cases requiring huge numbers of instant and private transactions without compromising on the security of a public blockchain.

FATE VM: faster, safer code

The Fast æternity Transaction Engine, or FATE VM, uses a higher level of abstraction and automatically minimizes error with type checking, delivering a simpler, easier, safer programming environment.

Smart contracts with Sophia

The æternity smart contract programming is unique: Sophia is a typed functional programming language in the ML family that makes it easier to write correct programs via minimizing side-effects and the usage of formal methods for verification.

ÆNS: dot chain names

Being part of the protocol the Æternity Naming System (ÆNS) uses human-meaningful names (NFTs) instead of cryptic addresses for accounts, making blockchain technology more accessible, less prone to errors, and human-friendly.Register your dot chain name today with the Superhero wallet.

Interoperable on-chain oracles

On æternity, Oracles are managed by special types of transactions. They can be programmed to request and provide data from information providers and APIs, empowering your blockchain apps with real world data. Having Oracles available on-chain improves security, reduces cost and eliminates the need for third-party solutions.

Developed entirely on Erlang, æternity is fault tolerant and perfect for cases with billions of transactions in DEFI and more.

Why æternity?

In a nutshell: powerful, scalable and secure at virtually every level. And it’s going to get even better with Hyperchains and other powerful features coming soon. Learn more about it here or read the whitepaper.

Universal

The æternity protocol is capable of supporting anything that first-generation Smart Contract platforms can-and more.

Secure

æternity was built with security in mind. The reference implementation is written in Erlang, following all standards of high-quality software engineering.

Scalable

To scale to billions of users and transactions, the æternity protocol provides trustless off-chain scaling with State Channels technology.
With Hyperchains the scalability will be further improved.

Open-source

The æternity protocol and all essential developer resources are fully open-source. There are no proprietary licenses whatsoever.

Very low transaction fees

æternity is equipped with native transaction types for managing State Channels, Oracles, and Names, among others. They are all optimied in terms of gas costs.Transactions and Smart Contract executions in State Channels don't incur any fees. Since all Smart Contracts are executed in the highly efficient FATE VM, less gas is needed overall. A FATE contract is only 10% of the size of an EVM contract.

DecentraliZed

With Satoshi’s legacy at its core, the æternity protocol is built to be decentralized.

Public and Private

While by default all on-chain transactions are public on æ mainnet with state-channels private transactions are possible. With the new Hyperchains upgrade private æternity-style chains (e.g. for consortiums) will become real.

User Friendly

The protocol-incorporated Æternity Naming System (AENS) enables users to point human-readable names to accounts, contracts, oracles, NFTs and more.

Transparent Governance

The æternity protocol is governed by miners, AE coin users and developers. Æ coin holders can vote on a regular basis about changes of the software system. Everyone's voice in the ecosystem should be and is considered.

Powered by the Æ coin

The Æ coin powers everything built on æternity. Every transaction requires a very small amount of Æ coin, as fee. Get an Æ compatible wallet, acquire some coins and start transacting on the Æ blockchain. Currently, the fee amounts to a fraction of a cent.

Build on æternity

The core team and community have built libraries, components, SDKs and other tools so you can easily start building on æternity direct from your terminal or through a web browser.

SOPHIA

Sophia allows developers to abstract on a higher level than other blockchain programming languages. Sophia is a functional Smart Contract language in the ML family with built-in higher level blockchain concepts like oracles, state-channels, names and more. Sophia is strongly-typed and has a restricted mutable state. Want to learn more? Watch some videos, or explore the links in this section.
